Dundee duo ST.MARTiiNS have been the talk of the Scottish Music scene since their appearance last year. Following on from their debut single Bad Art, they released their new song About U on Friday.
Beginning About U with a modest intro of intertwining guitars and distorted sound, we are then quickly captured with a bouncing assortment of guitars and bass. A perfect indie pop riff that has essence of Bombay Bicycle Club and more. No way is this a typical indie guitar track, it’s depth and jumping creativity from the first note is instantly intriguing. The instrumental is met with an unsuspecting slow, melodic vocal. Lyrics to and fro with realism and doubtfulness. They are paired with nothing other than beautiful vocals, they are inventive and magnetising.
There is unusual contrast of soft vocals and a loud instrumental with escapades of movement. The whole song is a fantastically unfamiliar piece, it stands within a league of it’s own. The abrupt ending of the song is upsetting and wanting more. Wanting more of ST.MARTiiNS but this is the current fix. That is your lot… until they release new music of course!
You can catch the due at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut as part of BBC 6 Music Festival on 22nd March or you can see them headline Tuts on June 30th. Tickets are available here – http://kingtuts.co.uk/stmartiins
